IS YOUR PELVIC FLOOR THE WEAK LINK IN YOUR BACK PAIN?

I have clients that come to 1:1 sessions and that return to group Pilates that find their core switching on 'mostly', but still find the pelvic floor is a bit mysterious. They don't necessarily have to have issues with there vaginal canal - eg prolapse - but they might not have the body-mind connection to their pelvic floor muscles in general. A disconnect between intentions sent and responding muscular action could be from trauma that is blocking the signals (like birth or sexual trauma) or from physical muscular stretching that has made it hard to feel the muscles contract.
More and more research is confirming what many women have felt for years: poor pelvic floor health is deeply connected to lower back pain.
Studies have found that women with chronic low back pain frequently demonstrate reduced pelvic floor strength and altered muscle coordination.
Your pelvic floor is part of your core system—it works in harmony with your deep abdominals, diaphragm, and lower back muscles to support your spine and posture. When the pelvic floor is weak, overactive, or out of sync, your body starts to compensate, and that often shows up as tension, instability, or pain in the lower back.
If you're dealing with persistent back discomfort, it’s not just about stretching your back or strengthening your abdominals —it’s time to look deeper, at the foundation. Tuning in to your pelvic floor might be the missing piece in your healing.

It can feel like a strange idea - putting something inside yourself. But I suggest you don't let doing something new, intimate & daunting put you off from finding out more about your own beautiful body as a woman.
Using these tools can help build internal awareness of the muscle function and improve pelvic floor outcomes. Although you need to proceed with caution and some women will want to do this under expert guidance of their physiotherapise/phsyical therapist.
25 % of women have tight pelvic floors or suffer pelvic pain, so back pain does not necessarily mean you need to strengthen. Weak pelvic floors respond more favourably to weights and tightness responds more favorably to tools that help relax and massage these sensitive areas.
